Newark NJ World Cup 2026 Rentals — Closest to EWR, 25 Min to MetLife

Newark is the practical choice — 10 minutes from EWR airport, 18 minutes by train to NYC Penn, 25 minutes to MetLife. The Ironbound is one of the densest Portuguese and Brazilian food districts in the country. We have four Sojourney suites here in Downtown Newark, all walking distance from Newark Penn Station.

EWR proximity is the underrated reason to stay here

If you're flying into Newark Liberty (EWR), the math is simple: rideshare from the terminal to our Downtown Newark units runs 10–15 minutes and $18–25. From most other Sojourney cities, the same trip is 30–50 minutes and $45–80 because of the Pulaski Skyway and Holland Tunnel approaches.

For international fans flying in late, the Newark stay means you're checked into the home before midnight even on a 9pm landing. We've had a number of group bookings where the first night was a Newark unit just to handle the airport arrival, then the group rotated to a Hoboken or JC unit for the rest of the trip — Sojourney coordinates the changeover under one reservation.

The Ironbound — what most fans miss

The Ironbound is Newark's east-of-the-tracks neighborhood, walkable from Newark Penn Station, and it's one of the largest Portuguese and Brazilian communities in the US. During the World Cup, it turns into something genuinely special — Portuguese cafes with TVs running every match, churrascarias packed for Brazilian fixtures, supporters from both national teams flooding Ferry Street the days before kickoff.

Specific spots: Casa Vasca on Prospect Street (Spanish Basque, the older of two adjacent Spanish restaurants on the same block, more local crowd), Sol-Mar on Ferry (Portuguese seafood, raw bar, reservations needed for World Cup weekends), Hell's Kitchen on Wilson (Brazilian, the rotisserie chicken is the order, do not order the Brazilian-style pizza), and Independent Coffee on Chapel for the morning before any 8am ET European kickoff.

Walking from Newark Penn into the Ironbound is 10 minutes east on Market Street. Our Downtown Newark Sojourney suites are 5 minutes from the station, which means a 15-minute walk to dinner and the same back home. No transit needed, no rideshares, nothing to plan.

MetLife from Newark — the shuttle math

Newark to MetLife is the simplest transit path of any Sojourney city outside East Rutherford. From Newark Penn Station, NJ Transit to Secaucus Junction takes 8 minutes. The MetLife shuttle from Secaucus runs every 8–10 minutes during match-day windows. Total door-to-gate from any of our Newark units: about 30 minutes.

The post-match return through Secaucus is the same crush as from any other origin city, but the leg from Secaucus back to Newark is fast — 8 minutes on the train, then a 5-minute walk to the home. Most guests we host base in Newark for matches and report being back home with food ordered within 90 minutes of final whistle.

Newark vs Jersey City vs Hoboken — when Newark wins

Newark is the right base over JC or Hoboken in three specific cases. First, if you're flying in and out of EWR and your trip is 4 nights or shorter — the airport-proximity savings on rideshares pay for themselves. Second, if your group cares more about food than nightlife — the Ironbound beats either Hoboken or JC for sit-down dinner quality. Third, if your group is corporate-heavy or older, and you want quieter blocks at night.

Where Newark loses: nightlife density, walkable bar-hopping, and skyline views. Hoboken's Washington Street strip and JC's Newport waterfront both beat Downtown Newark on those measures. We don't pretend otherwise.

Forest Hill — the residential neighborhood north of Branch Brook Park — is the alternative Newark base for groups doing 14+ nights. Tree-lined blocks, lower nightly rates, and a quieter feel; the trade-off is a 12-minute light rail to Penn Station instead of a 5-minute walk.

Booking direct — Newark-specific math

Newark direct-booking saves the same 14–16% Airbnb fee and Vrbo equivalent. Where Newark stays generate extra savings: per-night pricing here is meaningfully lower than Hoboken or JC for equivalent square footage, so the percentage savings translate to a smaller absolute number — but the long-stay tier discounts compound, especially at 14+ nights for fans following multi-match schedules.

The Newark suites also book under our combo system if you need 2–3 adjacent units for a 10–15 person group. Same building, same floor, one reservation. Most useful for corporate retreats or family groups where the host couple wants a separate unit from the kids and grandparents.
